The 2nd Annual Beach Food Pantry Holiday Chefs Challenge will be held on Thursday, December 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Kitty Hawk. Outer Banks Chefs will compete in this exciting and fun-filled event for the title of Outer Banks Chef of the Year! Each chef will have 60 minutes to create a delicious appetizer, dessert, or entree’ based upon a list of everyday food items that are distributed by the Beach Food Pantry. Attendees will be able to vote for their favorite chefs by using and purchasing Culinary Coins, and the chef receiving the most votes will take home the title! So come prepared to have fun and participate in the competition by voting for your favorite chef or chefs! Event goers will also be able to sample signature dishes provided by the chefs and their restaurants, bid on great prize baskets, and enjoy festive holiday music from a host of Outer Banks musicians.

An interdisciplinary team from East Carolina University is investigating a set of diverse maritime cultural sites in the Wilmington area that represent either a preservation risk or a potential resource to be showcased for heritage tourism. Case studies include a historic lighthouse, boathouse, wharves, coastal confederate earthworks, plantation and Civil War shipwrecks, fish houses, and Native American riverine sites. Children and adults alike will marvel at Winter Wonderland train display by master model builder Charlie Klein. There will be a children’s holiday craft table, letters to Santa (almost certainly to receive a reply from Santa) and a professional puppet show. Live entertainment will be provided by local choral groups, individual performances by local musicians as well as professional musical entertainment throughout the day. Refreshments will include a variety of hot soups, ham biscuits, holiday cookies and punch. There will be multi-themed fully decorated holiday trees, and shoppers will continue to receive an additional 5 percent off purchases when they bring a donation for the food bank. Enjoy the Museum’s new floral theme to the displays with fresh flowers and greenery. Holiday decorations will be for sale at modest prices or at cost. CAPE HATTERAS LIGHT WINTER CLIMB

Join us for a FREE winter climb of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Children must be at least 42″ tall to climb the lighthouse. Children under 12 must be escorted by a person at least 16 years old.

Climbing the lighthouse is strenuous. Climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is equivalent to climbing a 12-story building.

Young hatchlings ages 6-12 years are invited to spend an afternoon going bird-crazy. Kids will hear the story Merry Christmas, Merry Crow by Kathi Appelt – a wonderful tale of a treasure-gathering crow. This bird finds treasures wherever he flies and ends up decorating a tree with found items. After story time kids will enjoy making bird feeders from things like an orange to a pine cone and create edible ornaments for birds. Children will learn about local bird found in the gardens and their natural habit. Kids will enjoy a healthy lunch and watch a movie about birds. Parents enjoy an afternoon of free time. The Elizabethan Gardens has yet again arranged for Santa to join them at their WinterLights this December. And families can have dinner with the man of the hour on December 20 at The Gardens. “What we enjoy most about Dinner with Santa is how comfortable the kids become with Santa,” remarked Carl Curnutte, executive director of The Elizabethan Gardens. “Younger children have a chance to interact with Santa and their family. It’s truly just magical.” Along with one-on-one time with Santa, this dinner is a package deal creating memories for a lifetime.
