Hangin with Santa & Kites with Lights! November 26th & 27th, 2010 Come celebrate the end of a great year with us at our Kitty Hawk Kites Store in Nags Head (mile post 12.5). On the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, come out to our store to see Santa himself! Santa visits us each year in hopes of getting to fly a hang glider! On Saturday, the kite festival begins on Jockeys Ridge! Kites will be put up around 4pm, and as the sun goes down (usually around 5 depending on clouds), watch the sky light up with Kites with Lights! Santa always makes sure to see each and every child before he leaves for the day. If it's good weather, he'll be outside, and if it's cold he'll move inside the store so the kids can stay warm. We hope you make this a yearly tradition with your family like we have with ours! As soon as the sun starts to set, come up to Jockeys Ridge and see huge 19' delta kites soar above the dunes. When it starts to get dark, the lights really begin to show up! Check out our facebook page for pictures from last year's event. If you get cold, it's no problem! We'll have hot cidar and tons of cookies inside our store, free of charge for all spectators. If you want to be out on the dunes under the kites, we'll provide complimentary flashlights, glow sticks, and other light up toys. Just try to return them so we can use them for next year! For more information on Hangin with Santa and Kites with Lights or other events held by Kitty Hawk Kites, please contact Nick Barrett, our Events Director, at Continue reading

The waters off Cape Hatteras have claimed mariners and their ships since they first visited the coast of North Carolina in the sixteenth century. From the time that Sir Walter Raleigh’s flagship, Tiger, ran aground on the hidden shoals of the Carolina Outer Banks in 1585, there have been over one thousand documented sinkings and strandings along this treacherous coastline. The sunken ships from these four centuries of maritime history make the Outer Banks the greatest location for wreck diving outside of Truk or Scappa Flow. Many of the wrecks that lie off Hatteras were stranded on the hard sand of Diamond Shoals; others met their end from German torpedoes during WW II. The storms that beat against the shore in the winter and late fall drove many a sailing ship into the dangerous shallow waters of the cape, and then pounded them mercilessly. Now many of them lie in the warm Gulf Stream waters that average 78-85 degrees in the summer months and that boast incomparable visibility. Once you’ve dived these wrecks you’ll never stop coming back. outerbanksdiving.com 57540 North Carolina 12, Hatteras, NC 27943 (252) 986-1056 You can rate this business or post with stars and or thumbs up / down.
